Coach Henri Skiba's Biography
My first strength coach job was in 1977 at the age of 19. I’ve competed in powerlifting since 1977 and opened my first home gym in 1974. My first commercial gym was opened in 1974.
During my early competition years, World IPF Champion Ray Penna Sr. coached me in old school training techniques. These techniques led him to win the IPF WorldChampionships in Sweden. He also coached his son Raymond Penna to be U.S. Marine Corp. Champion and also placed 3rd in Mr. America.
In college I coached five bodybuilders in the prestigious Mr. Kansas competition, and we took the top four places. I’ve spent over 40 years competing and coaching. I have competed over 150 times, and all of these experiences have built me into a strong and focused lifter. With a keen eye for analysis for human biomechanics. In Skiba's Gym the lifters never question my eye for attempts. Through bar speed and visual analysis, I can maximize lifter attempts to guarantee their best totals or wins.
My personal tutoring by Lou Simmons for over 30 years helps me understand classical application of Russian, European, and Westside Training Techniques. Another innovative coach, George Dino Elder, helped me learn periodization and percentage training. Being a certified Westside Barbell Club and being the sole owner and director of Skiba's Gym allows me to set the focus and direction of the club. Therefore, when coaching, everyone is learning and heading in the same direction with the same goal in sight. I personally believe the background of my lifting career has provided me an imaginative, versatile, and valuable approach to lifting. I look forward to pass on what I have learned with you and the next generation of lifters.
